The campus may be closed, and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets may be spread across the country - but that doesn't stop The Citadel's mission. Each year, around Corps Day/Recognition Day weekend, The Office of the Commandant announces the next group of cadets who will lead the corps for the upcoming year. During their time at The Citadel, the ROTC departments provide military-contract cadets with officer training, to allow them to begin their military careers as officers after graduation. Through the departments, which include Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC, Marines ROTC and Navy ROTC, The Citadel is one of the nation's proven producers of top military leaders. Annually, the departments nominate their finest cadets and active duty students for awards. The award recipients are normally honored as a group in McAlister Field House. Even though the ceremony was canceled due to COVID-19, The Citadel wants to give these outstanding cadets the recognition they deserve.

During normal times, the changing of the guard ceremony would have taken place on this day as part of the annual Corps Day/Recognition Day weekend ceremonies. The Class of 2023 Summerall Guards would have performed their last precision drills as a unit and then passed their rifles to the new platoon. Because on this day, the Class of 2021 Summerall Guards would have performed for the first time, but cannot due to the campus closure related to COVID-19, the college wanted to recognize them by announcing their names.

The dean's list is a recognition given to cadets and students who are registered for 12 or more semester hours and whose grade point average is 3.20 or higher, with no grade of I (Incomplete) and no grade below C for work in a semester.

Cadets of The Citadel Class of 2023 received their rings on Friday, Oct. 12. The Citadel ring, known as the band of gold, symbolizes more than just a cadet's time spent as a member of The South Carolina Corps of Cadets or their time in the classroom. It symbolizes the military college's core values of honor, duty and respect; the same values Citadel cadets take with them to positions of leadership and service around the world after they graduate.

Sarah Dobrich has been named the Southern Conference defensive player of the week after The Citadel volleyball team closed out the week with three victories, two of which came in conference play.

A Citadel cadet recruit, Max Zappendorf, earned some extra support to help fund his pursuit of an education that will lead to a military career in cyber security and intelligence. Zappendorf was awarded the Marci McCarthy Scholarship for cyber security studies through the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP). The organization supports the representation of women and minorities in cyber security professions. Zappendorf, who is from Dawsonville, Georgia, is a freshman attending The Citadel through a U.S. Army ROTC scholarship. He applied for the additional ICMCP scholarship prior attending The Citadel. "I am very thankful to have this additional support and am thrilled I was selected," Zappendorf said. "My goal is to combine cyber security and intelligence studies with Chinese to gain skills that will be in high demand." During a conference in Atlanta in mid-September, ICMCP recognized Zappendorf and eight other college students from across the country who earned different cyber securities scholarships through the organization.

The Citadel officially welcomes the Class of 2023. Of the incoming class of 837 new cadet recruits and students, 80 are Hispanic and 87 are women.

More than 50 Citadel cadets were initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society for the fall 2017 semester.

Citadel Cadet James Jennings has secured a summer internship with Hill Construction. Jennings is a rising junior majoring in construction engineering, a new degree path through The Citadel School of Engineering.

Citadel Cadet Bryan Santana has secured a position as camp counselor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Santana is a junior in exercise science.

Recipients for The Citadel's Star of the West scholarship have been named for summer 2018. The scholarship grants up to $7,500 to cadets, undergraduate veteran students and evening undergraduate students for the opportunity to study abroad, expand second language skills and experience foreign travel.

Nine cadets in The Citadel Cyber Defense Team competed in the Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition on April 15. The team placed fourth out of eight.

Citadel cadets, faculty and partners are being recognized for their commitment to service learning and civic engagement by South Carolina Campus Compact (SCCC). SCCC is a coalition of 17 South Carolina colleges and universities that collaborate to promote and develop the civic purposes of higher education. As a SCCC member, The Citadel annually nominates candidates for the South Carolina Civic Engagement Leadership Awards. All nominees were honored, and some won statewide awards, during the 2018 Civic Engagement Leadership Summit on Friday, April 13. The nominees were recognized on campus during an awards ceremony on Friday, April 20.

Three Citadel cadets attended the Free Enterprise Forum April 9-10 at the College of the Ozarks. The two-day forum included sessions with guest speakers Dr. Burt Folsom, professor of history and management at Hillsdale College; Mary Propes-Reynolds, chairwoman of VDV Group, LLC, a family business; and Toby Rush, CEO of ZOLOZ, a digital identity solutions company. The keynote speaker of the event was Steve Forbes, chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media. After each guest speaker, students participated in break-out sessions that facilitated in-depth discussion. In addition to The Citadel representatives from Evangel University, Georgia Military College, Marion Military Institute, Marine Military Academy, New Mexico Military Institute, Southwest Baptist University, U.S. Naval Academy, Virginia Military Institute and Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets also attended the forum.

The 2016-17 Who's Who list includes nearly 100 cadets and students from The Citadel who demonstrated academic and military excellence this year.

James Jenkins spent his summer between graduation and reporting to Quantico for Marine training in Vietnam, volunteering at three different orphanages in Saigon. James did his research and volunteered through an organization called International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) which facilitates volunteer opportunities worldwide. "I had a really incredible experience in South East Asia. Vietnam is completely different than anything I've ever experienced and I learned so much. Having the privilege to work with hundreds of children in orphanages around the city was very moving. And being in a third world country for an extended period of time really changes you in a good way, something everyone should do at least once in their life. I learned a lot about humility and to really appreciate all I have."
